Build a Focus Bubble After a Setback

After a difficult result, other people may decide what it means for you. In her conversation with Derek, Valentina Shevchenko describes relying on a clear goal and a team she trusts, while keeping outside opinions from taking over her attention. She calls that protected focus an “energy bubble.”

The image is useful because it gives the team’s support a specific job. The people behind an athlete help prepare her and stay with her through good and difficult periods. Shevchenko says that support matters when outside voices begin telling her that her opportunity has passed.

Keep the plan inside the bubble

Shevchenko describes focusing on the work that could help her compete rather than choosing an approach just because it would entertain spectators. Her coach had a plan, and she wanted to follow it. She also recognizes that a new contest brings a new opponent and new circumstances, so the same result is never assured.

That is a more grounded kind of focus than pretending uncertainty is gone. The bubble does not control the outcome. It helps keep attention on preparation, the plan, and the people who understand the work.

Choose which voices can help

A team is most useful when its members know the work and can support the next step. That does not mean accepting every opinion or ignoring all criticism. It means weighing outside comments against what you know about your goal and the guidance of people who are preparing with you.

In Shevchenko’s account, the goal gives her a way to separate the noise from the task ahead. She describes focusing on training and doing the things she believes will help her compete, while trusting that her team will remain with her through the result.

Return to the next action

A setback can change what you need to work on. It does not have to decide the whole story. Give yourself a chance to review what happened, talk with people who understand the work, and choose a next action you can carry out.

The focus bubble is not a promise that the next attempt will succeed. It is a way to protect the attention required to prepare for it. In my article about choosing an optimistic view, I describe how to look for a constructive next action without pretending a setback is good.
