Keep Learning Through Direct Questions

I think learning should continue after school. A degree or a job title can mark progress, but it does not mean there is nothing left to understand. I try to learn something new every day, and one way I do that is by talking with people who know more than I do about a subject.

Computer science is not my strongest area. When a question comes up around people who understand it better, I can ask them directly and hear ideas I would not have reached on my own. The conversation only works if people can give a straight answer and work through the question together.

I also described a professor telling me how much a focused conversation with an experienced person could teach. I framed the value in terms of time: a good conversation might keep someone from spending much longer trying to work out a problem that another person already understands.

For me, continuing to learn is part of how I use the conversations around me: notice a gap in my understanding, ask someone who knows, and listen for ideas I can carry forward.

In my article about learning from people with relevant experience, I discuss another part of that process: staying open enough to consider what I hear.
